In the Tolkien Lord of the Rings, the Third Age was a time of all-out war. Now, in the 21st century, the Third Age has a different meaning. It is the time of life for those 55+. Now, that means a lot of Boomers.
There are those who might think it’s appropriate to call it the Third Age since Boomers have taken on every age with a zeal much akin to a war mindset …
And now, aging is no different. Boomers are truly changing aging in America – and across the globe, too, if we are honest.
Today’s adults aged 55+ aren’t just waiting to retire and go fishing. We’ve been saying that for a while now, but now the statistics are showing that the “oldsters” are really making waves and changing the way we all live.
There are a lot of things the 55+ age group can’t deny:
- Eyesight might not be as good as it once was …
- Hearing, although some might think it is selective, is not as sharp either …
- Moving around might be a little slower …
- There are more aches and pains …
- Food we have always liked to eat doesn’t always like us back anymore …
But there are some things that we can’t give up, either:
- Being active and involved
- Being in charge and independent
- Playing by our own rules
- Setting our own limits
- Enjoying life on our own terms
It’s not that we are stubborn or headstrong – although persistence, tenacity and doggedness has always been traits exhibited by our generation. No, I think it’s what we believe.
- We believe that we can do whatever we set our minds to – and gender doesn’t matter.
- We believe that we can have an impact on the world – starting in our little corner.
- We believe that age is only a number – and how you live makes a difference.
I don’t think that the 55+ age group thinks they will live forever, but on the other hand, they don’t want to be living like they are dead already, either. The world has so much in it to learn and explore, so let’s just keep getting out there until we are no longer able.
I am curious what everyone intends to take on in their Third Age. I’d love to hear what your plans are – and what you are already doing.
You might be surprised to know that it was in response to active people age 55+ that Love My New Freedom came about. People were a little worried about living alone, but weren’t ready to give up their independence and lifestyle (stubborn? No – happy!) So Love My New Freedom daily check in makes that less of a worry. Our subscribers stay independent, but if we don’t hear from them, we check on them. Everyone is happy!
The 55+ age group will always find solutions that make their lives work for them. Right?
A daily check-in call could be the lifeline, the joy you give someone that makes the biggest difference in their perception of what old age is like.
