8 Tips to Improve Security for Seniors Living Alone

Here at Keeping in Touch Solutions we understand senior citizens. We know caregivers find seniors’ willingness to trust wonderful, yet worrisome, especially when aging loved ones live alone. They may trust strange callers on the telephone and those who show up, unannounced, at their door.

They are members of the generation that still believes in respect. So when a caller announces that they are calling from the bank, for example, in need of personal information, many seniors won’t question the call. That’s exactly why so many thieves target this age group. Too often, they are easy victims.

To help your loved one stay safe inside and outside of their home, here are a few pointers:

  • Beside the door to enter the house from the garage, place a color, large, easy-to-read sign reminding the senior to close the overhead garage door.
  • Install a motion detecting flood light above the garage door and at the corner of the property to prevent would-be thieves from sneaking around in the shadows.
  • Install bright flood lights near the front and back doors.
  • Install inexpensive but highly effective “barking dog” monitors on each exit door of the home. These will play a loud tape of large dogs.
  • Keep shrubbery trimmed low around the home to prevent would-be thieves from finding places to hide.
  • Keep windows and sliding glass doors locked. Add vibration alarms to all glass, so that if windows or glass doors are tampered with, alarms will immediately sound.
  • Place ‘Beware of Dog’ signs on the front and back entrance doors.
  • If your loved one is a female, living alone, purchase a couple of large pairs of men’s work boots and place them within clear view of the home entrance doors.

A good idea is to place signs beside the home telephone reminding your loved one to never give any caller personal information such as social security numbers, birthdates, etc. and beside each exit door to never open the door for any stranger.
