Give Your Aging Mom the Gift of Security

From the time we were little children, we have happily celebrated our mothers each May with everything from homemade cards made with crayon and construction paper to giant bouquets and perfumes. As we grow into adulthood, it pinches our hearts to see that our mothers are aging right along with us. In some cases, their physical health is declining. At other moments, we note some confusion and struggles with short-term memory.

Regardless of how time is changing our mothers, we always adore them. So for Mother’s Day, consider giving Mom something other than the usual gifts that are piling up on closet shelves and in bathroom vanities. Consider these gifts:

  • Prepare several well-balanced meals for her and freeze them so she eats well without having to cook. Seniors who don’t see well sometimes overlook mold on foods they eat.
  • Does she struggle with climbing the porch steps? Keep your loved one safe from falls. Get family members together to build a wheelchair ramp.
  • Give Mom’s yard a thorough spring clean-up and planting. It takes great effort to keep the gardens and yard the way she has always liked them, especially in warm weather. She may not have the energy or stamina to clean out beds and plant colorful annuals, but insist on doing it, which can overtax her health.
  • Consider a gift of a cross-cut shredder. It may not sound too glamorous, but Mom may appreciate the safety it brings to her personal and financial information.
  • Bring a kind voice into her life every day. A daily call from a Keeping In Touch Solutions Care Giver can be the bright spot during long, lonely days. Even better, that call assures her family she is safe every day.

Always remember that no matter how old you are, you are still your mom’s baby. What is most precious to her is your time, the sound of your laughter and the feel of your hugs. You relied on her for many years and now you can let her rely on your care and love to help her stay safe, healthy and happy, too.
