Woo-boy! A real whopper of a red hot topic caused some heated conversation recently in a local eatery. I happened to be seated next to a table with five middle-aged adults, three women and two men, not that that matters. I wasn’t eavesdropping, really. The only way to miss the conversation was to leave and that would have been an overt measure.
They were talking about an aging father and “what they were going to do.” Dad had apparently had a fall and that caused them to think about his situation. Living alone and across town from any of the children, they were talking about relocating him from his home permanently.
First it struck me that they were making the decisions for him. I don’t know all the details of his situation, but I wondered what conversations they had had WITH him. It didn’t sound like there had been many, but I can’t be certain.
When it came down to the financial costs is when the discussion heated up. Several of the people wanted to consider only the cheapest options. That made me think. Most people want the best for their children. When it comes to babysitters, schools or opportunities for their children, most parents might not immediately choose the most expensive, but cost is only one of the factors, not necessarily the deciding factor. But when it comes to senior care, finding the cheapest option often becomes the focus. Families often believe that the most cost-effective solution is the best solution. Kind of a sobering thought, isn’t it?
That is one of the reasons why the daily call services at Keeping In Touch Solutions is so affordable. No one else (that I know of) offers a daily call from a real, live person every day – and certainly not at the rates we have set. (Plus, I know that getting a daily check-in call can delay a move from the place a senior loves and calls home.)
Affordable does not mean low quality, at least not with Keeping In Touch Solutions. What we want to be is a solution that benefits EVERYONE. Our mission is very clear. No robo-calls or recorded messages. That’s not our style because we believe seniors need and want something better – like a real, live person on the other end of the phone. Don’t you?
In the end, I know that these five people were not “bad people,” but in an emotional and stressful situation. Their concerns centered on their worries about senior safety and senior security and their dad. I know they are definitely not alone, which is why we offer a complimentary solutions consultation for those in their situation. A 15 minute conversation with an objective and knowledgeable person can bring clarity and reassurance and even provide some new ideas.
A daily check-in call could be the lifeline, the joy you give someone that makes the biggest difference in their perception of what old age is like.
