The Fear of Falling

Whether we live 10 minutes, 10 miles or 10 hours away from aging loved ones, we worry a lot about their welfare. As spring time quickly approaches, we should pay close attention to the very real possibility of a loved one suffering a fall.

According to the Center for Disease Control & Prevention, nearly 40% of seniors who live independently will take a fall each year. Of that 40%, half of those accidents will occur outside their homes. While you’re considering this astonishing statistic, keep in mind that seniors who take a fall inside their homes are usually in poor health with inactive lifestyles. Those who fall outside of the house are in average or better-than-average health but may still fall victim to hip fractures and brain injuries.

If your loved one still gets around well and loves to be outside, tinkering in the garage, planting a garden or weeding flowers, here are a few safety tips to discuss and implement:

  • If your loved one doesn’t have a cell phone, invest in one. If she or he already has an easy-to-use cell phone, discuss the importance of carrying the phone at all times. If a fall occurs, a call for help can be made.
  • Provide bright lights outside the home, especially around the front and back door so your loved one doesn’t accidentally miss a step.
  • Remind your loved one to keep the doors locked at all times, preventing a thief from entering the front door while your loved one is busy gardening in the backyard.
  • Remove any loose rugs from the door entries and garage. Replace them with heavy, non-skid mats.
  • Invest in gardening tools that help to alleviate too much deep bending. When seniors repeatedly perspire and bend over, they might suffer back pain later but also become dizzy from exertion.

Worry about your senior mom or dad sits on your shoulders as you handle a job and the demands of a family.
